The Yacht

This storied, custom, Swedish racer-cruiser stubbornly refused to become obsolete. Designed by the legendary Knud Reimers and built by Plyms in 1936, today she still stands tall as a potent competitor. On Lake Michigan – waters she has prowled for the last several decades – no one wants to race her. The list of medals runs pages long. She is chocked full of the best North high-tech sails and Harken gear. And so you could buy her to irritate all your friends who sail on carbon-and-foam rockets. Or you could buy her for the stop-and-stare factor; because you just want to own one of the most magnificent, beautiful, graceful and well-kept wooden sailing yachts on the planet.

Although updated extensively to keep her raceworthy, all the changes tastefully complement Reimers' aesthetic. All original parts have been carefully preserved, should you want to return Bacchant to a pure, as-built state. Owner has complete copies of original drawings. There's also a store of match-grained mahogany from the very tree from which the boat was built. Master perfectionist shipwrights have kept her flawlessly gleaming and structurally robust. Custom canvas protects her finish dockside. Out of the water she lives inside a climate-controlled bubble, keeping temperature at the ideal 50 degrees F and humidity at 70 percent.

Reimers envisioned her as an evolution of his winning lightweight designs in the 22- and 30-square-meter classes. Like them, she moves through the water with incredible ease. She could be in a museum, but it would be unfair to call her a piece of  history. While her peers became gorgeous antiques, Bacchant kept both feet firmly planted in the now. Arguably the finest skerry cruiser ever designed and built. Motivated seller has cherished this yacht and spared no expense in her annual upkeep, but is moving on to other sailing adventures. Price: $695,000 USD.
