The Yacht
Wind Chaser is a right-priced, well-kept example of the fabulously successful design which pointed the way to today's performance cruisers. In fact, having been so far ahead of its time in the early 1980s, the sleek and angular First 38 still looks contemporary. With it, Beneteau and designer Jean Berret invented the functionally driven yachting aesthetic which we know today as "euro-style." And at the same time brought robust engineering and world-class construction to production boat building.
Worldwide, these boats enjoy a legendary reputation for longevity. They have crossed many an ocean and even circumnavigated. The solid-layup hull is bonded and through-bolted to the deck to keep the joint strong and water-tight. A massive structural grid reinforces the hull bottom. Although there's an interior liner, all furniture and bulkheads are glassed meticulously to the inner hull. Beneteau took the added step of fiberglassing the hull liner to the grid. All of this produced a line of yachts which have stood the test of time and gained a big following as a used-boat best buy.
Built early in the production run, Wind Chaser displays all of the First 38's manifest virtues. The big T-shaped cockpit with angled combings is very comfortable under sail. It's easy to get around the clean, spacious deck. Down below, Beneteau's innovative modular construction system produced a voluminous, user-friendly, low-maintenance interior. Ower has kept her clean and bright and made a number of sail-handling improvements for easier boat management. A new #1 genoa was added in '09. She got a carbon spinnaker pole for Christmas in 2011. As you would expect, Wind Chaser shows no signs whatsoever of structural fatigue. Lying Milwaukee. Price: $62,500.
